Tips in Storing Your Jewelry

Your jewelry will have wonderful sentimental meaning to you as well as exquisite beauty. That’s why it’s important to keep them safe while storing them in your jewelry box or case. To help you with that, here are some tips:

Tips in Storing Your Jewelry

• Your jewelry should be kept in a clean and dry place, such as a jewelry boxes or case that is fabric lined. It is also possible to use an ordinary box, as long as you wrap each piece individually in soft tissue paper.

• Don't jumble your jewelry pieces in a drawer or case. Pieces, especially earring posts, can scratch each other and necklaces can easily get tangled with one another.

• Make sure your silver isn’t exposed to air and light during storage – this can cause it to tarnish.

• A hanging organizer with clear pouches is a great way to keep your earrings separate and visible. Place one earring in each pouch to ensure that the posts will not scratch the other earrings. Hang the pouch on your closet door for easy access.

• Small zip closure bags make great jewelry storage bags. Keep the clasp of necklaces just outside the zip to keep your necklaces tangle-free.

• Gold is a relatively malleable metal and can be damaged by scratches from hard gemstones. To avoid this, you should keep your gold pieces stored by themselves in soft cloth bags or the original box that you bought them in.

• If you have silver jewelry, it should always be kept absolutely dry. Your silver pieces should be stored in a tarnish-proof cloth away from exposure to the air. You can even buy special silver storage boxes that are lined with this type of tarnish-proof fabric so that they will keep your silver jewelry safe.

• A diamond is the hardest substance on earth and when it is improperly stored it can scratch your other gemstones such as rubies, emeralds and sapphires. Diamonds can also scratch silver, gold and platinum. In order to prevent this, you should keep it in a soft cloth pouch.

• Anti-tarnish strips should be used in all jewelry storage.

Ideas for Good and Inexpensive Jewelry Boxes or Storage Solutions

Looking for ways or ideas on how to get a good and inexpensive jewelry box or storage to keep those necklaces and earrings from being a pile of mess? Well, here are some pro-tip we can give you to keep your treasured jewelries well-organized.

• Look for something conventional!

Look for something conventional!

You want something that's both going to look good and be functional. When looking for a conventional jewelry box, first it should be cheaply constructed, doesn't contain all the organizational features you need, and will have an easy access, but will also help preserve your jewelry and prevent them from tangling.

• Or try something unconventional…

Try something unconventional

Be creative and use the simplest objects you can find at home as your jewelry organizers such as…

o Nuts and bolts organizer for storing your bracelets and rings. We love the fact that the hardware organizer rotates for a quick scan of your jewelry.

o Vintage aluminum ice cube trays for earrings. Even though these are ice trays, they feel glam and chic because of their aluminum coloring.

o Vintage mug stand is a great way to store and display necklaces. You can also spray paint the mug if it's plain white, and decorate it.

• Avoid those tangles.

Avoid those tangles.

Long boxes help necklaces--especially those with chains--stay separated, which prevents damage and a lot of swearing in the morning when you're trying to choose one. While space constraints may force you to keep them in a box, your best bet is to hang them. You can buy a back-of-door necklace rack as your necklace display, but I find that tie racks work just as well, have more pegs, and are available inexpensively at most thrift stores.

• Box within a box strategy allows you to customize for your storage needs.

Box within a box strategy

Craft stores sell boxes meant to organize beads, and happen to be the perfect size for small earrings. If you have expensive/delicate jewelry, I'd recommend keeping it in the box you received it in, as that will protect it best. You may also want to consider a separate lock box for truly expensive pieces.

• Think about access.

Think about access

Which pieces do you wear the most? Do you use your jewelry box when getting ready for bed? Consider keeping a very small box next to your bed to take out those earrings after a long night.

This DIY project doesn’t look quite similar to the first although both use several twigs. So how can you make one? Start by pilfering a few long, straight branches which will form the base of the display, then locate a few spindly ones. The more twists and turns your sprigs sport, the more options for hanging jewels later. It’s important to clean the twigs first and make sure to use copper wires to keep the twigs in place.

Organizing jewelries is not an easy task especially if you have a large collection in hand. That’s why here are 4 tips to help you organize those jewelries:

• Tip #1 - Sort Them Accordingly

Tip #1 - Sort Them Accordingly

The first step to organizing your jewelry is gathering it all together in one location. Sorting can be done in a variety of ways. Most people sort their jewelry by type but if you prefer, you could sort them in other ways that make sense to you. The important thing to consider when sorting is that it reflects the way you would look for something. You might like sorting the jewelry you know you wear together, or sorting them by texture or color. Sort your pieces and set them aside for the next step.

• Tip #2 – Find Containers

Tip #2 – Find Containers

Next, find different organization boxes, containers, or plates to help organize those sections of jewelry you sorted beforehand. You will also want to consider what spaces you have available such as drawer space, wall space, top of dresser space, hanging in the closet space. If you have mostly drawer space available and tend to be on the practical side, stackable jewelry trays or ice cube trays will be good options for you. If you are more of a creative type and have drawer space available, you may be more drawn to using teacups or muffin tins to store them.

• Tip #3 – Be Creative and Be Practical

Tip #3 – Be Creative and Be Practical

You can get creative with the way you store your jewelry. There are a lot of DIY projects that involves creating your own jewelry boxes or jewelry displays. You can also think something out of the box and use decorative ornaments at home to turn them into jewelry containers. Even old candle holders with the wick and wax removed could make great containers. Just be sure to keep them sorted as you did in tip 1 so you know where you can find each and every piece.

• Tip #4 – Or Simply Buy Organizers

Tip #4 – Or Simply Buy Organizers

If you don’t have enough time to do a DIY jewelry box then simply buy a jewelry organizer. Stores like Urban Outfitters, Forever 21, and Target also have cute little ornaments and organization helpers for jewelry as well, so you can always get some help from those as well.

How to Refurbish a Small Old Jewelry Box

Jewelry boxes, even small ones, can cost quite a bit. So if you're planning to a buy a new one to store your jewelry then may I suggest you a cheap way to obtain a beautiful jewelry box? And that's by refurbishing an old jewelry box you may buy from a thrift store. You can also ask your relatives, your mother or sister if she has an old jewelry box that you can work with.

Refurbish a Small Old Jewelry Box

If you already have the old jewelry box in your hand, then let’s start with the procedure of how you can refurbished your old jewelry box into a new one. This procedure works well with wooden jewelry boxes.

refurbish old jewelry box
• Step 1

Before beginning any refurbishing project that involves chemicals and/or paint, set up a work area in a well-ventilated area and cover the work area with a drop cloth to protect any flooring.

• Step 2

Remove any glass panels (if possible) from the jewelry box and clean the glass with simple glass or window cleaner. If there is any sticky residue from old tape or a purchase sticker, spray a concentrated amount of glass cleaner on the area and let it sit for little bit or use a residue remover.

• Step 3

Remove any liners or fabric from inside the jewelry box.  If the liner is glued to the jewelry box, do not remove the liner unless you want to replace it. If there are any stains in the liner, spot clean it with concentrated laundry soap and let dry.

renovate old jewelry box
• Step 4

Wipe down the inside and outside of the jewelry box with a solution of dish or laundry soap and water or vinegar and water if there are any musty or mildew odors. Leave the jewelry box open to air dry.

• Step 5

If the jewelry box has any hinges or other hardware, remove them and set them aside if they need cleaned, repaired or refurbished, or leave them as is if you want to paint them the same color as the jewelry box.

• Step 6

If the jewelry box has a lot of detailed carvings or grooves in the wood, use liquid sandpaper/deglosser to get into the cracks and crevices. Otherwise, use a combination of low and medium grit sandpaper to remove any existing paint or gloss and to smooth the surface. After sanding, wipe off the jewelry box with a damp rag to remove any sanding dust.

• Step 7

Before painting, cover any areas of the jewelry box, such as the inside of the jewelry box or any non-removable glass, with paper and painter's tape. Select a color to paint the jewelry box but makes sure to first apply a primer. After the primer dries, apply the paint. Remember, apply the primer and paint in thin even coats to prevent runs. Let the paint completely dry and put additional embellishments or details as you wish.
